Oberyn Martell, also known as the Red Viper of Dorne, is a character introduced in Season of HBO's Game of Thrones. He is a Dornish prince, the younger brother of Prince Doran Martell, and represents Dorne on the small council.
Oberyn is known for his charismatic personality, his open bisexuality, and his skill as a warrior. He travels to King's Landing ostensibly to attend Joffrey Baratheon's wedding, but his true aim is to seek revenge for the death of his sister, Elia Martell, during the Sack of King's Landing.
He is a formidable fighter, favoring spears and poisoned blades. His quest for vengeance leads him to volunteer as Tyrion Lannister's champion in a trial by combat, where he faces Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane, Elia's murderer. Despite initially gaining the upper hand, Oberyn is ultimately defeated and killed by Clegane, becoming one of the show's most memorable and shocking deaths.
